John Micklethwaite and Adrian Wooldrige. New York: The Penguin Press, 2004. 450 pages.

John Micklethwaite is the Editor for the Economist, and Adrian Wooldrige is its Washington correspondent.

This is a balanced account of the rise of conservatism in the United States in the past quarter century. It ties electoral defeats and successes with opportunities for the various conservative view points, from the religious right to fiscal conservatives and from libertarian to social conservatives. It allows the readers to identify the pressure points in the various organizations and the key concepts and individuals behind them. Among other themes, it talks about the development of the various think tanks and their champions and their relationships with each other.
